News from the North
by Lincoln Antonio
Last Saturday, our group ( mine and Thomas`s) "A
Barca" played at the ACBEU theatre in Salvador
during the IV Mercado Cultural festival. We were
there for the whole week, presenting our work to
various artists and roducers during the parallel
Latin American Arts Fair. The Mercado festival had
a strong impact on the cultural life of Salvador,
with loads of music shows, theatre performances,
dance, workshops and conferences bringing together
people from all over the world.
Today,
Tuesday 10th, we have just arrived at Sao Luis
( the capital of the state of Maranhao), where
we are going to give two shows. The first is on
Thursday at the City Circus, where we will play
the songs from our first CD,
Turista Aprendiz. On Friday at the Fonte de Ribeirão,
we will launch our new CD, Baião de Princesas,
which we recorded with the traditional group Casa
Fanti-Ashanti in Maranhão. The contents
of this CD is based on the ceremonial songs and
music of the most respected centre for african
- origin religion in the state, lead by Master
Euclides Talabyan. The show will bring together
A Barca with most of the traditional dancers from
the Casa in an open-air space in the centre of
São Luis.
