Tuned Percussion

Hazel Morrison, who was born in 1973, studied timpani and percussion at the Royal Scottish Acadamy of Music and Drama from 1990-1993. She graduated with a BA in Musical Studies.T he highpoints of her years at the Academy were lessons on drum kit from Dave Hassell (Airto) and percussion master-classes from Scottish virtuoso Evelyn Glennie.

Hazel played percussion for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra during their 1993-94 season, while retaining her passion for rock and pop music.

From 1991, she has recorded as singer and drummer for the Glasgow band 'The Bathers' and with them she was fortunate enough to play and record with artists such as singer Elizabeth Fraser, Justin Currie of Del Amitri, James Grant formerly of 'Love And Money', Davey Scott of the Pearlfishers and BAFTA -winning composer Paul Leonard Morgan.

Performances with 'The Bathers' took place in venues across the UK including King Tuts(Glasgow),The Garage(London and Glasgow) and the ICA(London). The Tron Theatre in Glasgow was residence for a collaboration between Bathers music and the dancers from The scottish Ballet. Although Hazel has played predominantly in the rock genre, she has continued to study solo marimba and is currently preparing Ney Rosauro's Marimba Concerto.

Teaching percussion in six secondary schools has kept Hazel very busy for the last eight years. She has set up samba bands in all of her music departments and has created a thirty strong Samba band for the Midlothian County Council, mixing traditional samba with reggae, funk and rock.

Hazel is currently working on a new project with Edinburgh folk/world band 'Cantara', with whom she played at the Edinburgh Festival 2002 and on 'Tartan Tv'. Cantara will release an album later this year featuring Hazel's vocals and drumming on the Highlander Records label.

A solo album is Hazel`s next challenge, including a range of songs and instrumental compositions. She lists Tom Waits, David Bowie,J eff Buckley, The Devine Comedy and Scottish percussionists Colin Currie and Evelyn Glennie as her main inspirations.
