Contra Xawara – Deus das Doenças ou Troca Injusta
[Against Xawara, God of Diseases or Unfair Exchange]  

From the idea of Xawara, which means “smoke from the epidemic of death” in the Yanomami cosmology, Juão Nyn proposes a counter-colonial journey in which he rehearses a new encounter between Indigenous peoples and the white man. The performer presents a manifesto against the ailments that came with this encounter, from the contact with new diseases to the exploitation of territories and communities. To this end, equipped with a syringe headdress, he creates a game in which he performs a reverse trade, discussing the logics of the colonization process. 

Juão Nyn is a multi artist, activist, and communicator with the Indigenous movement in Rio Grande do Norte. A member of the Estopô Balaio Collective of Creation, Memory, and Narrative, he is the singer and songwriter in the band Androyde Sem Par. He has been living between his home state and São Paulo for ten years, is the master of the Terreiro Teatro Contracolonial from the ELT – Escola Livre de Santo André and the playwright of Tybyra. All songs in his first solo album, Nhe’etimbó – Voz, Fumaça de Corpo, are sung in Tupi language.
