Quemar el Bosque Contigo Adentro  
[Burn Down the Forest with You Deep Inside of It]

To reflect about gender violence, the show by Mariana de Althaus creates a symbolic universe that intertwines nature and social relations. In a set surrounded by dry eucalyptus leaves and branches, is the home of three women, a grandmother, mother, daughter, who live in a Peruvian rural area, where there have been cases of abuse against girls. In this context, the girl’s father comes back after years of being estranged and, with him, silenced wounds are unveiled. The women in the family carry a past that burns them from within; they live with ghosts and everything they see in front of them is fire. The forest and the beings that inhabit it are also at the center of the scene, drawing a parallel between abuse against the female body and the depredation of nature. 

Mariana de Althaus is a playwright, a director, and drama teacher. She has written and directed 18 theater works and taken part in festivals including Santiago a Mil, Festival de Cádiz, Festival Hispanoamericano de Teatro de Miami, and MIRADA. She has published the books Dramas de Familia, Todos los Hijos, and La Literatura Es Fuego (Alfaguara), a collection of some of her works, and The Language of Mermaids (Inti Press).
