La Vida en Otros Planetas
[Life on Other Planets]

The show directed by Mariana de Althaus provides an overview of public education in Peru through the eyes of a group of teachers and students. On a set that resembles a classroom, the performers take turns between characters—teachers, students, and family members—and present historical data about education in the country, this “other planet” overlooked by the system. Drawing inspiration from the book Desde el Corazón de la Educación Rural, by Daniela Rotalde, which addresses the reality of teachers and children who are rendered invisible, the dramaturgy incorporates real-life accounts by educators collected from anonymous questionnaires and personal testimonies by the cast. 

Mariana de Althaus is a playwright, a director, and drama teacher. She has written and directed 18 theater works and taken part in festivals including Santiago a Mil, Festival de Cádiz, Festival Hispanoamericano de Teatro de Miami, and MIRADA. She has published the books Dramas de Familia, Todos los Hijos, and La Literatura Es Fuego (Alfaguara), a collection of some of her works, and The Language of Mermaids (Inti Press). 

The Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano (ICPNA) [Peruvian North American Cultural Institute] is a nonprofit dedicated to teaching english language and promoting culture in all its forms. Since 2002, it produces theatrical works.
